A Ralph McQuarrie concept art for the planet Vulcan, produced for the abandoned Planet of the Titans feature.
A Ralph McQuarrie concept art for a docking platform on Vulcan. The thinking was that terrible air quality had forced the population to live underground.

In these landing concept paintings, note the design development from an early varient of the Bird-of-Prey to a more final version.
Planet Vulcan had previously been seen briefly in the original series episode “The Amok Time” and in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. In both productions, Vulcan was depicted as a red, sere planet, though all that was shown of its civilization were two ancient and remote religious sites. In keeping with what had gone before, The Search for Spock called for another such location—Mount Seleya, site of the fal-top-pan ceremony with reunited Spock's katra with his regenerated body.
