Between May 17 and 20, the world’s biggest Gothic festival with an expected number of visitors of around 20,000, the Wave Gotik Treffen, will take place in the German city of Leipzig for the twenty-second time. If you ask, what it is, you’ll get thousands of different answers, because it offers so many options: concerts, culture, theater, events, friends, art, party…

Just be sure: It’s worth visiting!

Despite being an event of the dark scene it also offers several program points especially interesting for steampunks. One of the most interesting might be the confirmation that Abney Park will give a concert, the second one ever on the European mainland after the first one in Eindhoven, which was reviewed here last month.

After the great success of the first try last year, there will again be a steampunk picnic at the park near the Moritzbastei at Saturday from 3 to 6 PM. Feel free to join! More information can be found here.

But not only is the program itself worth visiting the event for: among the hundreds of different vendors are several steampunk ones, selling jewelry, weapons, clothing, etc. Plus the general atmosphere in the city is amazing! Since the different event locations are spread all over Leipzig you see thousands of festival visitors strolling about, watched by the “normal” people. But the inhabitants of Leipzig have become familiar with the Treffen over the last two decades.  The festival ticket gives you access to city trams to take you from one area to another. Leipzig even installs the “black line” 31 especially for the WGT.

You can find more information about the festival itself, buy tickets, check out new confirmed bands coming and more on the official website.

Some further information:

Festival tickets cost 89€ in presale and they include free use of the public transportation within the city. If you want to use the event’s parikn areas you’ll need a parking vignette for 15,- €.Camping at the event-area will cost you an extra 25€ but includes also the the extensive program book “Pfingstbote”.If you don’t want to camp you better check the city for hotels and hostels quickly, because some are fully booked right after the last WGT!

If you need a guide for the WGT beside the programm, you shoud have a look at Sadgoth.com which adresses especially visitors from outside of Germany.

Some more insight of the festival? The organisators describe their in event as following:

[…]  From its beginning the Wave-Gotik-Treffen has been much more than a music festival: its guests may step back to the romantic atmosphere of ancient times at the medieval market place, the pagan village. We will have authors reading, unusual theatre and cinematic performances will take place as well as a big live action role play. People in historic clothing will gather in the park for a Victorian Picnic. For four days a large hall on at the agra-Messepark will turn into the biggest Gothic-wares marketplace in the world. In countless clubs DJs from all over the world will invite you to dance until dawn. There will also be a large fetish party where entrance is only possible by following a strict voluptuous dress code. A stroll through the winding passages of city centre of Leipzig with its historical buildings of the Renaissance, Baroque and Jugendstil eras is especially worthwhile for art and culture lovers: the entrance to several of Leipzig’s museums is free for WGT-guests.
[…] The most fascinating aspect of the Wave-Gotik-Treffen is surely its unique magic atmosphere that covers the whole city. Gothics from all over the world celebrate their gathering in a peacefully relaxed manner, turning Leipzig into a diverse wave of black. Once a year about twenty thousand Gothics come home: to the Wave-Gotik-Treffen.

  1. I totally agree, Steampunk has been steadily gaining importance in WGT through the years. Even more, the way I see it Steamgoth is taking shape…

I will be there this year, participating as vendor with Decimononic, and both my partner Irene and I have high expectations of it.

Hope to meet you there, good luck for the Steampunk Picnic and enjoy the fest!!!
