Dieselpunk fans will be familiar with Philip K. Dick’s The Man in the High Castle (1962), one of the genre’s precursors. In the book, the Axis powers won World War II and divided North America between them. A Nazi puppet regime occupies the East and Central United States while Japan controls the Pacific states. A Rocky Mountain buffer state exists to keep them apart.
The alternate history novel is now made into a television series by Amazon Studios.
The pilot, which was released in January, does little more than set the stage for the actual adventure to come. There is plenty of intrigue and hints of a German-Japanese cold war turning hot once Adolf Hitler dies. We also get a look at a Nazi-made supersonic jet that apparently flies between New York and San Francisco in two years.
The first episode can be watched at Amazon for free. The rest of the season is coming soon!
