For as long as he could remember, since he was a kid, Dan Everyman had dreamed of becoming a pilot. Sadly, he was a bus driver. A good bus driver, if a frustrated one, but just a busman. It was such a pity that Dan could only have the briefest, slightest glimpses... almost nothing, really... in his dreams, asleep or not... of an alternate dimension with this place called Diesel City, where Dan Everyman was the skilled, happy pilot of one of the numerous, regular flying bus of the metropolis, expertly maneuvering his beautiful machine along the Yellow Line N°78 all day.
Of course, in the beginning, not everyone was able to see that all these changes were initiated by The Global Power for people’s well-being, so The Empire had to devise this wonderful, almost painless machine. Coupling a battery of rather voluminous generation 1.0 computers with what looked like an X-Ray gun mounted on some electric chair and operated by just a doctor and a nurse, the machine could both wipe out your hard disk in a flash and print fresh, new datas in it. The most reluctant specimen, then, had to admit that he had a much clearer understanding of the Global Power’s motto “We’re Doing It For Your Own Good.”
Both the increasingly hectic traffic in Diesel City and the rapidly expanding surburbs of the city forced the Ministry of Transportation to consider some sort of response to the issue of public transportation. However, because the impending conflict (see the Diesel City series) made it necessary to save all available supplies as well as all of the workforce for the war effort, the decision was taken to turn the trolleys fleet of the city into urban aerial commuters and to entrust the project to the Ministry of War. The combination of these reasons gave birth to the strange hybrids officially named Shuttlecocks by the Town Hall, and that inhabitants of Diesel City unceremoniously call Cockchafers.
