Topic: Anyone fancy some De Profundis?

(I'm not sure if this belongs here or in Startling Stories - it's not a play-by-post RPG, but it's about roleplaying. If I picked wrong, please feel free to move it.)

For those that don't know, De Profundis is Hogshead Games' lovecraftian letter-writing RPG. There is no GM; the plot is created entirely by players writing letters to one another in character. Once a game of it starts (generally with only a couple players) more people can be added by being "introduced" to correspondents of the other characters.

Anybody feel like trading addresses and playing? Pulp is fun, pulp horror is fun, and putting yourself into the pulp horror is also fun.

Re: Anyone fancy some De Profundis?

Moved to Startling Stories.

I'd never heard of this but it sounds like fun. I don't quite have the time to participate though, but I hope others do!

Re: Anyone fancy some De Profundis?

Ooh, sounds like a great idea. I'd be very tempted to participate. I suppose our story would have a setting incorporating a year and month for start time of the letters. We could date each new one appropriately then, making it easier to keep track of story progression.

Would it not also be interesting to incorporate diary entries by the characters (as a secondary means of storytelling, with letters still being the focus) to allow for some things only to be known by one character instead of being forced to involve the others?

A pulp horror game... where I can write Lovecraftian letters?

I. So. Want. In.

Re: Anyone fancy some De Profundis?

I've played it in the past.  I'm always interested in playing.  Feel free to PM me and I'll send you my address.

Re: Anyone fancy some De Profundis?

How does this work, then?  Does everyone get a copy, or only the correspondents?  Do they take it in turns?  I may be interested, as I don't usually have time for the usual RPGs (as you may have noticed by my absence from the forums here), but may do for this!

Re: Anyone fancy some De Profundis?

I would be interested too, but do we do that by e-mail ? I think it would be more easy for me if we do so.

Sounds good. I propose that for ease of tracking it be the same date within the game as without, save for a difference of eighty-five years - that is, starting in 1924, a year near the middle of Lovecraft's writing carreer.

The normal approach is for each letter to only be sent to whoever it's addressed to. No player will ever receive the totality of what's going on, but shocking discoveries of a frightening nature will rapidly spread throughout the game to become common knowledge for future correspondence to build on.

Personally I'm a big fan of the fun of opening a freshly-received letter, primarily because it gets you into the mindset of a character living before typewriters were common or computers available at all, but I won't complain if others swap e-mails.

The perils of academia, my dear Colonel!  Seriously, I can't read my own writing - there's a section of my lecture notes that I wrote which I cannot decipher, even going back to the original text book I can't work out what my words are.
